No Bears
Jafar Panahi, a renowned Iranian filmmaker, premiered his latest film at the Venice Film Festival. Despite being banned from directing for 20 years due to accusations of spreading propaganda, Panahi has continued to make movies and has established a notable filmography including The White Balloon, The Circle, Offside and 3 Faces. His latest film, which he also stars in, is about a banned filmmaker named Jafar Panahi who takes a risky journey to the Turkish border to continue making films. The film is a fictionalized version of Panahi’s life and serves as a powerful reminder of the power of cinema and the bravery it takes to resist oppression.
Eternal Daughter
British filmmaker Joanna Hogg and actress Tilda Swinton have collaborated on several films, including The Souvenir, The Souvenir Part II, and the upcoming The Eternal Daughter. In this film, Rosalind (played by Swinton), a filmmaker, takes her mother (also played by Swinton) to a gothic mansion that used to belong to their family after the death of her father, with the intention of making a movie about her mother. However, as family secrets are revealed, it becomes clear that the trip may not be as simple as it appears. The pair have established themselves as a strong director-actor duo in the film industry.
X
Ti West, writer and director, excels in creating horror films that evoke nostalgia, as seen in The House of the Devil. His latest film, X, produced by A24, is a horror-comedy about a group of young filmmakers, including Mia Goth in a dual role, Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi, and Jenna Ortega, who set out to make an adult film in Texas, but things quickly spiral out of control. The movie is a slow-build but ultimately rewarding, and it is considered a better tribute to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre than another movie that shares the same name, which is set to be released in 2022.
We’re All Going To The World’s Fair
We’re All Going To The World’s Fair was well received at Sundance in 2021 and was released and later streaming on HBO Max in 2022. It is a low-budget but imaginative horror film that explores the modern world of internet challenges and the strange things that can come out of them. The film is a blend of horror, realism, and has elements of other movies such as Candyman, Unfriended, The Ring and Compliance. The film is also relatively short at around 85 minutes, making it perfect for those with short attention spans. This quality earned it a spot on our list of best movies of 2022.
Vengeance
Vengeance is a satirical, darkly comedic film that explores the current state of the world, written, directed and starring BJ Novak. The story follows a 30-something New York City media professional (played by Novak) who travels to rural Texas after the death of an acquaintance and becomes embroiled in a potential murder mystery. The film features an exceptional cast, including J. Smith Cameron, Ashton Kutcher and Boyd Holbrook. Holbrook’s performance stands out in particular, as he is the driving force of the film, leading the audience to understand the perspective of Texans through his one-liners.
Glorious
Glorious is an independent horror film written and directed by Rebekah McKendry, who is known for her expertise in horror films and a PhD in Media Studies. The movie features a unique and captivating concept, where a man gets trapped in a rest stop bathroom by an interdimensional creature that can only communicate through a glory hole. The creature is voiced by the Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons, and the film is a horror movie that offers everything a fan could want: a wild concept, visually stunning, existential dread, thought-provoking dialogue and two great performances by Simmons and Ryan Kwanten.
Orphan: First Kill
Orphan: First Kill is a prequel to the 2009 horror film Orphan that was released in 2022, and it was surprisingly well-received. The movie stars Isabelle Fuhrman who returns as Esther, using a combination of body doubles, CGI, and camera tricks to play the child-size character as an adult. The movie follows Esther, who is stuck looking like a child but is actually an adult, tricking a family into bringing her to America after she escapes from a hospital in Europe. Although the plot may sound similar to the original, the movie features a twist that makes it exciting and different.
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
Marcel is a popular short film that has gained a lot of views on YouTube, but this list is about movies that may have been missed by some audiences. Although the film may appear to be intended for children, it is a beautifully crafted and powerful film from Dean Fleischer Camp, Nick Paley and Jenny Slate that should not be overlooked. Despite its small size, it packs a big punch.
To Leslie
Andrea Riseborough is known for her ability to seamlessly transform into different characters, making it difficult to remember where you’ve seen her before. Her performance as the lead character Leslie, an addict, in the drama film from Michael Morris, is no exception and it’s likely to leave a lasting impression. Although the film may be seen as Oscar bait, Riseborough’s portrayal of Leslie’s unflinching descent into addiction is powerful. The film, which is Morris’ feature debut, raises the question of what more Riseborough needs to do to receive the recognition she deserves.
Aftersun
Calum (Paul Mescal) takes his daughter Sophie (Frankie Corio) on a vacation to Turkey in hopes of bonding with her, but the events that unfold during their trip are unexpected and understated. Writer/director Charlotte Wells avoids melodramatic and explosive elements in the film, instead focusing on the quiet tension between father and daughter and the subtle moments of emotional connection between the characters. The film is a well-crafted testament to the fact that a grandiose scale is not necessary for cinematic storytelling that keeps the audience engaged.
Apollo 10 1/2
One of our best movies of 2022, Writer and director Richard Linklater’s new film “Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood” uses rotoscope animation and combines both real and fantastical elements. The film tells the story of a young boy named Stanley growing up in Houston, Texas in the 1960s during the height of the Space Race. The film is semi-autobiographical and has a real sense of authenticity. The film also includes an imaginative story where Stanley is recruited by NASA for a secret mission to the moon, preceding Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.
